Kuklah was a collaborative textile design project that began during the first summer of the pandemic, emerging from the search for a hat to live in every day. Tvin and Pınar began making hats from scratch, thinking through the relationship between body and clothing from head to toe — what a hat carries, and what it means for a being. A hat can suggest social roles and identities, while also functioning as a simple form of protection for the human head. This research gradually expanded toward the handwoven textile traditions of Anatolia and the disappearing fabrics within them. The project explored how antique textiles could continue existing within contemporary everyday objects and designs, giving forgotten fabrics a second life. Beginning with Kandıra bezi, the research focused on a cloth traditionally woven by women in nearly every household of the village and used for countless purposes — from bridal garments to shirts, curtains, and tablecloths. The idea that a single type of fabric could answer so many everyday human needs feels distant in today’s world. The project aimed to suggest an understanding of simplicity filled with possibility — where a single material could accompany everyday life through function, protection, and presence.
